“Every outfit is an argument.” The 2025 Met Gala in New York City has arrived this spring on the first of Monday in May 7th, with its classy yet historic theme: Black Dandyism and dress code: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style – a tribute to sharp, personal, and bold fashion rooted in black history and identity. Co-chairs Lewis Hamilton and Coleman Domingo displayed their opinions that this year’s the most significant Met Gala yet, celebrating the legacy of Black sartorial excellence. Though the theme was straightforward, many guests managed to deliver unforgettable interpretations, turning the red carpet into a masterclass in style and innovative storytelling.
This year, highlights from the Met Gala were extraordinary and surprising. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fundraiser has raised over $30 million, which makes it the most successful fundraiser in the Met’s history. Athletes also took the spotlight at the Met Gala. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, Sha’carri Richardson, the fastest woman in the world, and many more had posed across the same carpet as other A-listers in the event.
Additionally, Rihanna revealed her baby number three with American rapper A$AP Rocky is on the way by debuting her baby bump in a suit-inspired corset dress from Marc Jacobs on the Met Gala steps. Furthermore, the former vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, managed to make an appearance at the gala in an elegant black and white gown from Off-White. Though her red carpet debut was a low profile, her attendance was a welcoming surprise for all.
Many celebrities had also taken the theme for this year’s gala with significance. Gigi Hadid wore a custom Miu Miu gold sequined dress that references Josephine Baker and 1940s Black fashion designers such as Zelda Wynn Valdes. Blackpink LISA also debuted at the Met Gala carpet with a custom sparkly black blazer, and underneath a mesh bodysuit that is patterned with embroidered faces in black lace of Black people who had made history.
No Met Gala is complete without its legendary after-parties at the Casa Cipriani, where A-listers let loose in even more daring looks. This year, the celebrations were a vibrant continuation of the night’s theme. Jenna Ortega wore a black bodysuit designed to look like a blazer, while Sabrina Carpenter wore sleek black pants with a stylish white shirt and a black tie under a fuzzy yellow coat with Louis Vuitton logos. The after-hours festivities proved that Black dandyism isn’t just a style; it’s a dynamic, living culture.
Beyond the glam, the 2025 Met Gala was a powerful acknowledgement of black creativity’s enduring influence. From the precision of tailoring to the authentic self-expression, every look celebrated a history of resilience and reinvention. As Hamilton added, “This isn’t just fashion–it’s a movement”. And on this night, the movement shone brighter than ever.
