Welcoming one of the newest additions to Disney Plus entertainment, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is now a popular TV series on the streaming platform. The show is a direct adaptation of Rick Riordan’s iconic fantasy novels. Announced for production in May of 2020, dedicated fans have long awaited this moment. Riordan himself expressed his excitement about the new live-action adaptation, stating he would be involved in the project and that it would aim to be a faithful homage to the books.
Starring young sensation Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, the show features a diverse cast of talent with Leah Sawa Jeffries and Arya Simhadri completing the trio of Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood. The filming process commenced in June of 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia, with almost a 2-year-long journey from storyboards to the big screen.
The first season of 8 episodes premiered on Disney+ on December 19, 2023, with a weekly release schedule that ran until January 30, 2024. Receiving an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, many praised its faithfulness to the source material, expansive world building and fantastic actor performances. The series was renewed for a second season in February 2024, only 2 months after its premier.
“We’re so thankful for the notable and devoted Percy Jackson fans who’ve enthusiastically supported this challenge from the very beginning,” said Pamela Levine, head of advertising for Disney Branded Television and National Geographic Content. “They’ve been counting down the times, and as a unique thanks, we wanted to permit our enthusiasts to experience the primary two episodes a chunk in advance than expected.”
