On November 27th, 2024, the release of the cultural phenomenon “Wicked” swept the world by storm; however, this theater kid’s dream was found all over the internet before hitting the cinema’s silver screens.
For over a month, the online community shared great love for this movie. With thousands posting videos inspired by the greatest hits in the musical, some of the notable ones being; Cynthia Erivo’s “Defying Gravity” riff and Ariana Grande’s “What is this Feeling?” dance number.
Written as a book by Gregory Maguire in 1995, it was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2003. Composed by musical genius, Stephen Schwartz, and performed by stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the musical reached global fame and touched the hearts of many. The movie explores the themes of identity, friendship, morals, and sacrifice. When two unique individuals: Elphaba Thropp (Played by Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda Upland (Played by Ariana Grande) meet at school, their loathing blossoms into a new friendship. As the duo embark on their journey to meet the Wizard of Oz, their friendship and personal values are put to the test when faced with conflict and decisions that will affect all. At the end of the movie, Elphaba makes the ultimate decision not to turn against the animals, and thus sings her iconic number “Defying Gravity” as she begins her wicked journey of so-called “evil”.
The 3-hour movie features Erivo and Grande’s vocals and their prowess to make each song their own. Previously known for her work as Celie in the musical “The Color Purple”, there was no doubt that Erivo had the vocal ability to hit all her notes. Especially when the singer stunned us all with the global sensation of her “Defying Gravity” riff! The very “Popular” Ariana Grande has been a fan of Wicked ever since her grandma brought her to see the show with the original cast. In multiple interviews, Grande openly expressed her enthusiasm for one day playing the role of Glinda. To prepare for her strenuous role, the singer began vocal training 3 months before auditions to be the best fit for Glinda. Other notable actors in the movie include Oscar-winning actress Michell Yeoh, the fans’ favorite Jonathan Bailey, SNL’s Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Jeff Goldblum, and Ethan Slater.
